A Better Way to Clean Up Pollution

Biosearch Ambiente – Center for Environmental Biotechnology – is an Environmental Science company providing remediation solutions for contaminated sites using bioremediation technologies.

The company  was established in 2001 in Turin, Italy.

bioremediation

Bioremediation employs a suite of remediation technologies based on the action of naturally occurring microorganisms which can be stimulated to destroy or detoxify organic and inorganic pollutants in the environment. These microorganisms are present even in highly contaminated environmental matrices and they are able to transform pollutants into innocuous substances.

Bioremediation processes are usually carried out in situ (i.e. without removing the polluted matrix), treating soil superficially or below ground and groundwater. Bioremediation is a relatively low cost technology effective against many of the most widespread environmental contaminants.

innovative

The remediation technology defined by Biosearch Ambiente represents the simplest, yet most advanced system for environmental reclamation, it can be applied to point and diffuse pollution and it offers the highest standard of environmental and economic sustainability.

icon

effective

The bioremediation technology developed by Biosearch Ambiente has been successfully applied in both full-scale remediation and emergency spill response situations. It is a dynamic and versatile technology, modulated specifically for each event and deals with the pollution problem by acting directly on the source of contamination.

sustainable

The bioremediation systems applied by Biosearch Ambiente reduce costs by up to 70% compared to traditional systems. Efficiency, economic viability and environmental sustainability are the key attributes that make bioremediation the best solution for cleaning up polluted sites, according to the EU assessment criterion of B.A.T.N.E.E.C.

SITE SPECIFIC REMEDIATION

The strategy adopted at Biosearch Ambiente relies upon treatability studies, carried out both in the laboratory (microcosm tests) and directly on site (pilot tests), to define the full-scale remediation approach. Each site requires specific solutions to return the environmental matrices to their vital functions.

contaminants treated

Biosearch Ambiente is listed in the Italian Register of Environmental Operators – cat. 9. Our track record demonstrates that seriously contaminated soil and groundwater can be effectively decontaminated using a bioremediation approach, with high economic and environmental sustainability.

CHLORINATED SOLVENTS

CHLORINATED SOLVENTS

Chlorinated solvents, such as perchlorethylene, trichlorethylene or chloroform, are a class of chemicals widely used in many industrial processes. They pose a serious danger to human health when dispersed in the environment, due to their toxicity and carcinogenicity. These pollutants are frequently found in groundwater. An effective and decisive strategy for their removal from the environment is to exploit the metabolic action of bacteria naturally present in the contaminated sites.
PCBs Polychlorinated Biphenyls

PCBs Polychlorinated Biphenyls

For their toxicity to humans and the environment and for their exceptional stability to chemical attack, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are very dangerous for living organisms. The pollution from PCBs is particularly alarming when it concerns agricultural areas. The PCBs, in fact, can reach humans through the food chain. The biological treatment (bioremediation) for the removal of PCBs from contaminated matrices represents the only possible way in terms of environmental and economic sustainability to solve diffused contamination of these hazardous chemicals.

REMEDIATION PHASES

The  reclamation  of a polluted site is a complex and multi-phase process. Our  highly qualified team can guide the client through the different phases of the regulatory process, evaluate the available technologies and  identify the approach that can best guarantee an effective and sustainable solution to the problem. Effectiveness, time and cost are all taken into account.

PRELIMINARY SITE ASSESMENT

A first characterization of the polluted site includes an analytical chemistry screening to assess the concentration levels of contaminants present. These levels are compared to the concentration thresholds established in the Italian Legislative Decree 152/06; if they exceed the limits fixed by law, the site is defined as “potentially contaminated”

icon

Characterization Plan

An administrative process follows, involving the subject responsible for the site and the public authorities, and results in the drafting of a “Characterization Plan”. This plan indicates the source of the pollution and the degree and extent of its diffusion in the site (the Conceptual Model), through chemical and hydrogeological investigations.

RISK ASSESSMENT

The next phase of the process involves the application of the so called Site-Specific Risk Assessment (D.Lgs n.4/2008) to assess the level of risk to human health and the environment. If the concentration levels of contaminants detected in the site are above the relevant risk threshold, remedial action is needed.

icon

PILOT TEST

A series of studies are carried out in the laboratory and in the field, with the aim of determining the best approach for the clean-up operation, in terms of efficacy, cost and time.

icon

REMEDIATION PROJECT

The Remediation Project outlines the strategy for the development and implementation of the remedial action aimed at eliminating the risk associated with the contamination.
The intervention proposed in the project should be in compliance with the BATNEEC criterion (Best Available Techniques Not Entailing Excessive Costs).

icon

REMEDIAL ACTION

The Remedial Action will follow the guidelines approved in the Remediation Project, as authorized by the relevant authorities. Implementation can only be carried out by authorized companies, listed under Category 9 of the Italian Register of Environmental Operators.
Biosearch Ambiente is listed as registration N.TO23752.

Case studies

Thanks to many years of experience in the field of environmental remediation and constant research & development acivities, Biosearch Ambiente is able to deal with extremely complex and dispersed environmental contamination situations.
Effective and sustainable remedial interventions have been applied succesfully to different types of contamination.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Biosearch Ambiente has participated in several research activities, not only in the remediation field but also in many other environmental sectors, in order to improve its know-how and explore novel technologies of environmental and commercial value. These projects aimed at the production of biopolymers, biofuels, hydrogen from biomass waste and the environmental impact assessment of production systems.
